Neighborhoods in Redondo Beach

South Redondo

The oceanside half of the city, holding the beach, the pier and King Harbor, Riviera Village, Parras Middle School and Redondo Union High School, along with Alta Vista, Beryl Heights and Tulita elementary schools.

From Los Angeles County's first port to King Harbor

Redondo Beach began as a shipping and resort town. The Hotel Redondo opened in 1890, and in that era Redondo served as the first port of Los Angeles County: Pacific Steamship Company vessels called four times a week at one of its three wharves on the run between San Francisco and San Diego, while trains carried visitors and freight in from Los Angeles. Voters adopted cityhood on April 18, 1892, by a vote of 177 to 10. The shipping trade faded after San Pedro's harbor took shape from 1899, and by 1912 the steamship line had stopped calling altogether.

The modern waterfront was built against the ocean. A breakwater completed in 1939 gave only limited protection and changed how sand moved along the beach, a 1953 storm damaged the breakwater along with streets and private property, and in 1956 work began on King Harbor, named for Representative Cecil R. King. The pier followed its own cycle of storms and rebuilding: after two winter storms and a fire on May 27, 1988, the current reinforced concrete Municipal Pier opened in 1995.

What happened to the AES power plant on Harbor Drive

The AES Redondo Beach Generating Station at 1100 Harbor Drive used ocean water for cooling, drawn in and discharged under a state water quality permit that allowed up to 674 million gallons a day into King Harbor at one outfall. California's once-through cooling policy, adopted by the State Water Resources Control Board, required coastal plants like it to end that practice.

To comply with that policy the plant retired its cooling system: it disconnected and de-energized the eight pumps that circulated ocean water, eliminated its wastewater discharges and began removing hazardous materials, and on July 24, 2025, the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board adopted an order terminating its discharge permit, keeping only stormwater monitoring in place. What the site becomes is a separate question with a long history of disputes; in 2023 the city rejected an application for a large mixed-use project there. Anyone buying near the harbor should check the city's current planning documents for the site.

North Redondo and South Redondo: how the city splits

Redondo Beach's schools map its two halves clearly. The Redondo Beach Unified School District's eight elementary schools, two middle schools and one comprehensive high school are divided between the areas: five elementary schools and Adams Middle School sit in North and central Redondo Beach, while three elementary schools, Parras Middle School and Redondo Union High School are in South Redondo Beach. Adams serves sixth through eighth graders in the north, and Parras is the designated middle school for central and south Redondo.

It opened on August 12, 1995, as part of the original Green Line, and since a service restructuring in November 2024 it has been served by the K Line, for which it is the southern terminus.

The station connects to Beach Cities Transit and several other bus lines, and it sits within walking distance of Northrop Grumman's Space Park campus. An extension of the line beyond Redondo Beach into Torrance is in planning, which is worth tracking for North Redondo buyers who commute by rail.
